hite privacy policy
Last updated: 29 October 2026
hite is a study app for students in India preparing for JEE Main, JEE Advanced, MHT CET, BITSAT and board exams. It teaches lessons, gives practice questions, answers questions with an AI tutor, and can lock the apps you choose until you have studied. This policy explains what hite collects, why, who else handles it, how long it is kept and how you can delete it.
Who we are
hite is made by a student in Mumbai and published on Google Play by Dilip Khemani ("we", "us"). For anything about your data, including questions, requests and complaints, write to hiteapp@gmail.com.
The short version
- You sign in with Google, or with an email address and a password. Your account is how hite backs up your study data and keeps Ask AI fair for everyone.
- Your study data (progress, answers, notes, Ask AI conversations, profile and settings) is backed up to the hite server so you can restore it on a new phone.
- When you use Ask AI, your question, any photo you attach and your first name, class and exams go to the hite server and on to Google's Gemini service, which writes the answer.
- The app lock sees which app is open so it can lock the apps you chose. It never reads what is on your screen or what you type. Which apps you open, and when, stays on your phone.
- If you join the weekly tournaments (optional), your display name and your points for the week are shown to other hite users on leaderboards. Your state is shown only while you show on the Local board. Your email, class and study data are never shown.
- hite has no ads. We never sell your data and never share it for advertising.
- You can delete your account and all of its data in the app (Settings, then Account, then Delete account) or at https://hite-ai.lockin-relay-7f3a.workers.dev/delete-account.
What we collect and why
Your account
When you create an account, Firebase Authentication (a Google service) stores your email address, your name (from your Google account, or the name you type), a user id that Firebase creates, how you signed in (Google or email) and whether your email address is verified. If you use an email address and password, Firebase handles the password and we never see it.
We use your account to sign you in, to keep your backup, and to apply the daily Ask AI limits.
Your profile
Your first name, your class (11, 12, dropper or other) and the exams you are preparing for. hite uses them to pick what to show you and to tell the AI tutor who it is helping. Your profile is kept on your phone and in your backup.
Your study data backup
While you are signed in, hite backs up your study data to the hite server, so that you get it back when you sign in on a new phone. The backup holds:
- your profile and settings, including the apps you chose to lock, your free screen time, your night lock times and your tournament choices (which boards you show on, your state, and the players you hid);
- your progress: lessons done, answers you gave, practice history, revision dates and streaks;
- your minutes: what you earned by studying and spent on hints and in locked apps (only totals of minutes, never which app or what you did in it);
- your Ask AI conversations (the text of your questions and the answers) and your notes.
Photos you attach to a question are not part of the backup. A backup is at most 5 MB, and each new backup replaces the one before it.
Ask AI
When you send a question, hite sends to the hite server:
- the text of your question and the earlier messages in that conversation;
- any photo you attach;
- what you were looking at in hite when you asked (for example the question or the lesson step on screen);
- your first name, class and exams, so the tutor can pitch the answer at your level.
The hite server passes this to the Gemini API (Google) to write the answer and sends the answer back to your phone. The hite server does not store your questions, photos or answers. The only copy it keeps is the conversation text inside your backup, as described above. Google provides the Gemini API to us as a service provider under its paid terms: it does not use your questions to train its models, and it keeps them for a limited time only to detect misuse and to meet legal requirements.
Please do not put other people's personal details, or photos of people, in your questions.
Reports about AI answers
Every AI answer has a report button. If you report an answer, hite sends the answer, the reason you picked, any note you add, your user id and the install id (below) to the hite server. We read reports to find and fix bad answers. Reports are deleted automatically after 90 days. If you report a name on a leaderboard, hite sends that name, the reported player's user id and the reason, along with your user id and install id, and it is kept in the same way for the same 90 days.
Tournaments
Weekly tournaments are optional and only for hite on Android. Nothing is stored for them until you tap Join in the Me tab, after hite shows you what other people will see. Each week runs from Monday 12 am to the next Monday 12 am, Indian time. You earn points for the study hite already counts (lessons, checks, practice questions, revision and the daily boss), and the boards rank those points.
If you join, hite stores this in Google Cloud Firestore:
- Your score for each week: your display name, your points that week, whether you show on the Global board and on the Local board, and your state (only while you show on Local).
- Your friend code: a random 8 character code, with your display name beside it. Anyone who is signed in to hite and types your exact code can see that name. Codes cannot be listed or searched.
- Friend requests: who sent it, who it is for, the sender's display name and the code that was used.
- Your friend list: the display names of your friends. Each friend's list holds your display name too.
- The time each of these was saved.
Your display name is what you type in Join. It starts as your first name, so change it to a nickname if you do not want your first name shown.
Who can see what
- On the Global board, other hite users see your display name, its first letter and your points for the week. You are listed only while you show on Global.
- On the Local board, they see the same, and only people who picked the same state see it. Your state is stored on your score only while you show on Local. hite never uses your phone's location. You pick the state yourself.
- Friends always see your points for the week and your display name, even if you hide from Global and Local.
- Your email address, class, exams, answers, apps and study history are never put on a leaderboard or shown to friends.
How to stay off Global or Local. In Join, or later in Me, then Tournament, then Who sees you, switch off Show me on Global or Show me on Local. You are then not listed or ranked on that board. If you switch off Local, your state is removed from your score. You can also hide a player from your own boards, remove a friend, or report a name. To stop completely, tap Leave the tournaments in Me.
Limits and security
To stop abuse and runaway costs, the hite server counts Ask AI use per account, per install and per network address (IP address) each day. The counters are stored as one-way hashes and reset every day. Your IP address is used only for this and for protecting the server; it is not stored in a readable form and is never used to work out where you are.
hite also makes a random install id when it is installed and keeps it on your phone. It is sent with Ask AI requests, reports and backups, as a second key for the limits. It is not linked to your phone's hardware or advertising id.
What stays on your phone
- Which app is open. The app lock uses Android's accessibility service to learn which app is in front, so it can show the lock screen over the apps you chose. It only learns the name of the app in front. It never reads what is on your screen or what you type. The record of which apps you opened and when stays on your phone; only the total minutes spent in locked apps goes into your progress.
- The list of apps on your phone. hite shows it so you can pick apps to lock. Only the apps you pick are saved, in your settings.
- Usage access (optional). If you allow it, hite checks Android's record of the last app opened, so the lock never covers the wrong app. This stays on your phone.
- Display over other apps and notifications are permissions hite uses to show the lock screen and reminders. They collect nothing.
Who else handles your data
We use these service providers. Each one processes data only to run hite for us:
- Google Firebase Authentication (Google LLC): sign-in and your account.
- Google Gemini API (Google LLC): writes the Ask AI answers.
- Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc.): runs the hite server and stores backups, counters and reports.
- Google Cloud Firestore** (Google LLC): stores the tournament data described above, in Mumbai (asia-south1), only if you join the tournaments.
Google Play delivers the app and its updates; Google's own privacy policy covers Google Play.
These providers may process data outside India, including in the United States. We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers or data brokers, or use analytics or advertising tools.
We may disclose data if the law requires it, for example in response to a valid order from an Indian court or authority.
How we protect it
- Everything hite sends travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
- Every Ask AI, report and backup request to the hite server must carry a valid sign-in token for your account, and a backup can only be read with the account that made it.
- Cloudflare encrypts stored data at rest.
- Only the developer can access the hite server's data.
No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach that affects your data, we will tell you and the authorities as Indian law requires.
How long we keep it
- Your account and backup: until you delete your account.
- Reports about AI answers and leaderboard names: 90 days.
- Weekly tournament scores: kept until you leave the tournaments or delete your account. Leaving deletes every week's score straight away.
- Friend code, friend list and friend requests: until you leave the tournaments, remove the friend, answer or take back the request, or delete your account.
- Ask AI counters: a few days at most.
- Questions sent to Gemini: not kept by the hite server; Google keeps them for a limited time for misuse detection.
- On your phone: until you delete your account in the app, clear hite's storage or uninstall it.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account. In the app: Settings, then Account, then Delete account. This deletes your tournament data (all your scores, your friend code, your friend list on both sides and any friend requests), your backup, your counters and reports linked to your account, your Firebase account, and hite's data on your phone. Without the app: see https://hite-ai.lockin-relay-7f3a.workers.dev/delete-account.
- Correct your data. Edit your profile and settings in the app at any time. Change your display name in Me.
- Tournaments. Switch off Global or Local, hide players, remove friends, or tap Leave the tournaments in Me to delete your tournament data without deleting your account.
- Get a copy. Write to hiteapp@gmail.com from your account's email address and we will send you your backup.
- Stop. You can stop using Ask AI, turn off the app lock in Android's accessibility settings, or sign out at any time.
- Complaints. Write to hiteapp@gmail.com. We reply within 7 days. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Students under 18
hite is made for students in class 11 and 12 and for droppers, so many people who use it are 15 to 17 years old. If you are under 18, use hite only with your parent's or guardian's permission, and show them this policy. Your Ask AI questions go to Google's Gemini service like everyone else's, so please check with them before you use Ask AI. If you join the tournaments, your display name and points are shown to other hite users, so use a nickname and talk to them first.
hite is not meant for children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has an account, we will delete it. A parent or guardian can ask us to delete their child's account by writing to hiteapp@gmail.com.
hite shows no ads, builds no advertising profile, and does not track you across other apps or websites.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we update the date at the top. If a change matters, for example new data or a new service provider, hite shows a notice in the app before it applies.
